What Are Music Together Classes Like?

Class Schedules

Mixed Ages
This is the essential class that children can attend from birth through age five for all nine song collections. This class is based on research by child-development specialists - by grouping children of various ages, natural, family-style learning is fostered. Each child participates at their own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring instruments. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating the older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and parents like being able to bring the whole family.

Babies Class
Two options are offered for babies under the age of eight months. They may attend a mixed age class whether registered on their own or attending free with an older sibling or they may attend a special "Babies Only" class. This class is a one semester class that is an introduction to Music Together. (This class cannot be repeated.) The activities and music are specially designed for parents who want to learn about music development in infants. You will meet other parents of newborns and learn many musical activities you can recreate at home with your baby.

Big Kids Family Music
We are excited to pilot a new 55 minute class from "Music Together" geared to the interests and social nature of children ages 5 & 6. Your child must be at least 5 years of age by the start of the semester you wish to attend. Prior participation in "Music Together" is NOT REQUIRED. Families still play an important role in this class, although the adults and children may have different musical roles. Game songs, folk dances, jam sessions, dramatic play, and more structured work in rhythm and tonality will be included. *Younger siblings are not developmentally ready for the structure of these classes, therefore, except for babies eight months and younger, only children in the specified age range and their adults may attend these classes.

Playing with music is fun and nurtures the child's musical ability. Children have many opportunities to create and to play - making up rhythm patterns, making up new words to songs, making up movements to express a sound. Some children will simply stare and "study" the experiences, as they absorb the musically rich environment. Other children will sing, play and dance freely because they are in a comfortable, encouraging environment, and because they know the songs and chants from the songbook, tape and CD they take home.

Each class has ritual features which the children need and enjoy - the hello song, an instrument play-along, a lullaby and the goodbye song. Eight to ten other experiences are included in each class, ranging from free movement to rhythmic rhymes in unusual meters.

Regardless of your background in music, you can give your child a love of music. Adult participation is easy, non-threatening, and fun parent enjoyment is the single most important factor in fostering a love of music-making in children.

Classes allow each child to explore music informally on their own level and pace in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments.

This program is family oriented where children from newborn through 4 years old participate with parent, grandparents, caregivers and siblings in actual musical experiences rather than just the learning of concepts or information about music.

This creative and playful interaction is essential for passing on the enthusiasm for making music throughout ones lifetime and contributing to your child's growing musical intelligence. ALL CHILDREN ARE MUSICAL!

Each semester, families receive a new recording of original compositions and traditional songs performed by outstanding singers and instrumentalists, along with a songbook full of pictures and activities to help the whole family learn and enjoy the songs at home.

Music Together is a worldwide program which conducts ongoing research and development through The Center For Music and Young Children.

INFORMAL INSTRUCTION
Children may or may not participate as they choose and are given the freedom to respond according to their developmental level. The experience, reinforced by listening to CDs and parent involvement, stimulates learning at home through play.

Special Needs
Music Together is a valuable experience for children of special needs. It stimulates all senses and influences brain activity.
